Developing a solid waste management (SWM) scheme takes into account the reality of the situation on the ground—the socioeconomic backdrop and the SWM system currently in place. EDG's team conducts literature and field research, including stakeholders focus group meetings and interviews. Background conditions are carefully evaluated prior to propsing alternative solutions.
Data collected is analyzed with the objective of assessing the adequacy of existing solid waste management services and identifying the potential for and constraints to improvements in the service. The team examines collection, transfer and disposal methods for all types of solid waste—including agricultural, industrial, medical and municipal waste—and any gaps in service levels. The research also assesses the capabilities and resources of the municipal workforce and of different players engaged in solid waste recycling.
